In Reply to: female is digging big holes AGAIN! No eggs Going on 50 days! posted by Gecko2525 on January 14, 2003 at 08:32:24:

Females can hold sperm until conditions are right for making and laying eggs. This may be why it's taken 50 days for her to start making some real efforts to start digging. She may also be doing it for the moisture (if she's getting ready to shed) I know my male will dig around in the egg tub for some moisture if he's getting ready to shed and if I forget to spray down that day or I forget to re-wet the humid hidebox.

When my females lay they tend to dig around for a few days and then cover everything up and make it perfectly flat. That may just be my females though so dont use that as an indicator. Me digging around in the egg tub doesn't seem to bother them any or keep them from laying, and it gives me a chance to check the moisture level. It should feel damp but not wet (if that makes sense). Just keep checking the egg box every day and keep it moist by misting it (not dumping water into it you may drown the eggs).

Hope this helps some, if you have any more questions just ask.

Tegan
