Few questions.
what type of ratsnake is it?
some Elaphe never take to rats with much enthusiasm.
what size was the rat you were trying to use?
you may want to start out with rat pups.
Was the rat live, or frozen/thawed?
maybe the snake was startled by the rats movement if alive.
If the rat was an adult, was it male or female?
I have heard that some snakes dont like male rats (this may sound wierd, but I have had snakes that would only eat brown female rats).
