i don't make it over to the ratsnake forum often enough, see what it gets me? : )
regarding the coxi, and how it relates to Fred's post below, with follow up by Walt and Adam.
first of all, i don't think there is a better market than kingsnake.com. for any particular species, and in this forum's case, ratsnakes, where are you going to find a wider collection of enthusiasts? lot's of folks just keep ratsnakes, hell, PE keeps ratsnakes, as we haven't been doing them that long, and we are just started on the ratsnake road, even if it is paved in double black stripes.
but here on kingsnake's ratsnake forum there are real ratsnake ENTHUSIASTS, folks that live and breathe ratsnakes. if i have some great animals available, i couldn't think of a better place to be.
now regarding the price of coxi. some folks need to face reality here. consider this......
the coxi have been available from the beginning, and only a few years ago, as reverse trios. everyone that wanted to get into this project had to pay the $4500, and get only a single female. they sold well. they are sweet animals. at the same time, i know that lots of those animals died from improper husbandry (mostly being kept too warm and dry, and low 80's is too warm). we lost a number of animals ourselves trying to find the way.
so there are LOTS of single males out there, relatively (in the case of the coxi, 20 males would be lots) and only a handful of females, which are not just worth their weight in gold, but in platinum coated with diamonds.
last year, we were lucky to breed the coxi. i was hoping for some favorable ratios to balance out our heavy males, but i didn't just get reverse trios, i got worse.
we still sold the animals in reverse trios, and we have bred them again this year (females females females please!) but we have 8(!) single males from last season left.
eight.
EIGHT!!!
nobody is going to buy 8 single males at $1500 ea, come on! in fact, no one is going to buy one! but that doesn't mean that we should then just sit on the animals and not sell or share them with anyone else.
these are great snakes, and extremely beautiful. keep them (real) cool, and they are simple to work with. why is it so bad to sell them at a reasonable price so that more folks can afford to get them for their simple beauty?
breeding is what drives the snake market at this level. people will pay big money for something they can breed and "make their money back" on. but no one wants to pay $15,000 for an aberrant new morph male boa with no functional hemipenes. and no one wants to pay full price of $1500 for a male coxi that they know will most likely never find a mate.
$750 is a reasonable price that will allow more economically incnlined hobbyists to work with this animal. and guess what.....
at $750 they are still a tough sell. so it isn't too cheap, and it isn't wrecking the price of anything. coxi have been $4500 for reverse trios for at least 3 straight years. what other single snake has held its complete value like that year after year? the coxi are going to start at that price again this year, as babies have already arrived from Germany (and Dr. Klingenburg here in Colorado) and they are priced at the same $4500 for reverse trios (through Bushmaster).
we haven't wrecked anything. and we sure as hell aren't an example of an unscrupulous breeder that doesn't care.
so tell me Adam, after trying to single us out on two recent occasions for posting pics and for selling coxi at $750, is there a point you are getting at, something that is bothering you, or why do your posts need to point to PE?
we are working our butts off over here to not just breed great animals, but to hold an extremely high standard for quality and service in the reptile industry. there are so many scoundrels in our industry, if someone wants to pick on something, pick on them.
