A few days ago my "E. persica" started to hatch. I looked in the incubating container and there was already one out of the egg. It had been 56 days. The rest hatched that day and the next. Of seven eggs laid, one was bad (the snakeling died after about a week), one was a red phase hatchling, four were black (two totally black), and one was full term dead in the egg. Much success this year, but one big bummer :(
This dead snake relates to the "egg cutting" we were talking about last week. Since the egg didn't pip on its own after all the others, and two days had passed, I decided to help it out. I slit the egg open, and then waited for the snake to poke out its nose. It didn't do this and today I took the last snake out of its egg. It probably was dead when I slit the shell. The baby was upside down, and obviously was unable to right itself. It may have been a little tangled in its coils.
The question has been whether or not to slit eggs, and how to do it. Maybe, if I had slit this last egg a day earlier, it would have survived. I don't know. It was a beautiful red phase Persian, with distinct blotching, and about 12 inches long. I'll post a picture later. Still, five out of seven is pretty good for the first time hatching these guys. I'm pretty happy :)
