Sorry to hear about the baby Mandarin that didn't make it.
I put a piece of damp newspaper or paper towel over the eggs to soften them up. I started doing this to each egg box about a week or two before they're due to hatch, it really causes the shells to soften up real nice. Since doing this, I've noticed the babies (of various species) pipp much longer slits and also come out of the eggs much quicker after pipping. There's nothing worse than loosing a full term baby that never hatched out. I've even had some start to pipp before they die. That's a real bummer.
Here's a weird story...
Earlier this week I had an albino southern pine hatch from an egg I was sure went bad. The only reason I never threw it away was because it was stuck to 3 other eggs. This egg turned 80% black! The baby pipped in the very small white section of the egg and later hatched out fine. I'll think twice before I ever throw any eggs away in the future.
