John, per our conversation, by holding the can and applying so close to the paper towels left a thick layer that would take a fairly long time to dry. Due to this, vapors were still present and probably building in up in the cage after the snakes were replaced. Allowing them to breath the vapors will cause neurological dysfuntion. Usually if the animals get past 48 to 72 hours, all symptoms will disappear in about a week with no permanent effects. We make it clear on the label to hold the can 12" to 15" from the surface of the substrate and spray at the rate of about 1 second per square foot of area. This method assures of the proper dosage and allows the spray to dry quickly. Provent-a-mite has been tested with many species of "sensitive" reptiles at 10X dosage levels with no problems and has thousands of users that get great results without any problems. We do tell people that the directions must be followed to be sure it will not harm the reptile. Holding it closer or spraying for longer periods of time will result in a thicker application than needed which will take much longer to dry. There is no real treatment that would be effective in the case of such an overdose. Please contact me if you need any additional information.
