Hi Tony,
I have a very similar snake to the Taiwan Beauty that you are considering, a Vietnam 'blue' Beauty, Elaphe Taeniuras ssp. She's young. (Size approx. 2 & 1/2 ft.) She is *very* nervous & quick! She bites at a still hand if it is in her perimeter of vision.
I handle her almost daily, but with careful attention to keep my hands out of her vision & making sure that she does not have enough of her front body free to make a really effective strike. Small as she is, her bite can draw blood. I don't dare take my eyes off her for long.
I've only had her for about six weeks. She has not calmed down at all during that time.
Instead, I have become more skilled;) I hope that she will mellow some-in time, but I have not yet heard anyone say that the Asian Beauty snakes are mellow "lap" snakes. I wouldn't recommend them for a small child.
I have heard that the Beauty snakes are easy to care for. Mine has a healthy appetite & has grown visibly in the past month.
I hope that you receive several responses from others who have Asian Beauty snakes. I will be interested to read their posts as well.
BTW: If you haven't tried it already, plugging "Elaphe Taeniuras" into a search engine will bring you some results.
Regards,
CJ
