Hi--
I think I replied to Tony on another forum, but here's my more specific experience with corns vs Asian rat snakes.
First the corn: nothing bad or cautionary to say about this snake. period. she's utterly sweet, eats well, has NEVER shown slightest agression from when I first purchased her at 4 months. She's a ghost corn, and in my opinion utterly gorgeous. Incidentally, I got her from ProExotics who are listed in the breeders/dealers section.
Next: blue beauties. I have a breeding pair & one batch of offspring. The adults are over 8' & still growing. When we first bought these snakes, they took "aggressive" to a whole new height...struck at the glass if you walked into the room. Now, the male qualifies as a 'mush'...very easy to handle. The female is still a little more moody, though hasn't tried to bite in a very long time. The youngsters are quite nippy, though getting less so with each day. There are even a couple that never try to bite anymore. Caveat: my husband is a genius with taming agressive snakes, w/o him I make no guaruntees :)
So between these two, while I am myself completely besotted with blue beauties & wouldn't sell my adults for any price (and I'm bummed I don't have space for 8 babies who grow like mad), I can't recommend these for anyone who wants young children to handle them.
Another option you might consider though is the Russian rat snake. They get a little larger than the corns, though not as large as the blue beauties, are a bit different looking, and all three of mine have fabulous temperments. They also are very easy to care for.
I would suggest that you try to hang out at some good reptile stores, or shows, where you can handle individual snakes & get a feel for their personalities. There is so much individual variance, even within species! I would strongly caution against buying through the mail...even from me:)...since you have no way of telling what personallity you're getting. And with a small child, I wouldn't want to take any risks.
