In Reply to: Elaphe carinata, or Chinese king ratsnake, or keeled rat... posted by Jaffo on May 26, 2000 at 19:58:31:
Hey, Jaffo, what's up?
Carinatas are not kept by everyone, but a few people have had them, including Larry Keller at Prairieland Herpetoculture. Last I knew he had them on his list. Dj and Anja have kept them before at DNAexotics.
Keeled ratsnakes get big, but not four meters, a little over two meters according to Schulz, ('96). I kept one for a few months, a long time ago. It didn't present any problems. They're at least partially nocturnal. They hibernate, as they are a montane species of s. China, similar range as the Mandarin rat. I think they will eventually be put in another genus, but at the same time they do have some similarities with the Asian Elaphe.
It might be a little difficult to find someone to talk to about them this time of year. I'll try to help with questions if you want, although I have little experience with them. Good luck.
Terry
