color vs locality

I live in PA also (originally from MD) and I cant recall ever catching or seeing an adult black rat that wasnt black (only rarely did you see a faint pattern thru the black). I've also seen adults from the south and west which retain a decent amount of their pattern into adulthood. Locality patterning? Any thoughts or comments, folks?
