With that said, I'm wondering if anyone has known black rats to retain noticeable pattern well into adulthood ( 4'to 5'+), and still later get a lot blacker. I've been working with black rats for about 17 years, and it's been my experience that once they ( all obsoleta ssp.s ) reach roughly 3' they pretty much look how they are going to look.

i would agree w/ that assessment alan. at 3', most ratsnakes have stopped changing. i live in southeast pa. and the blackrats around here [nj, del & md] have turned all black by the time they're 3'. sometimes you'll see scant traces of a pattern at this age but that will eventually disappear as well. this summer i saw a 6 footer on a golf course in salem county, nj and she was blacker than midnight. i like that look better than the more western versions..........
