Although I feed all of my young on aspen I thing it would be safest to feed on a smooth surface. Due to numbers I dont find the time to do this but I dont worry about it or I would.
I ***ALWAYS*** make sure the food item is totally dry before putting it in the container. If you thaw your food items out in hot water just make sure and let them set out for an hour or so after paper towel drying them before putting them in the cages. Letting them dry TOTALLY can make all the differance.

:However, it is always worriesome for me to see a snake fed directly on loose substrate, even shredded aspen. As you can see in the image, there is a LITTLE piece of aspen stuck to the tail of this mouse. Over time (if the snake doesn't pass it piece by piece) or if it accidently ingests a little more than what we see in this photo), this undigestable material can get "trapped" in this snakes digestive tract resulting in impaction and death. This ain't good: trust me!
:You may wwant to consider feeding on something else other than the substrate.
