I always use hide boxes, so I make sure that they don't have sahvings in the box, through the food item into the back of the box, put the snake into the box, and "trap" the snake in the box by putting the open end of the hide box against the inside wall of the cage. I used to feed, clean the cages, and change the water for over 400 breedersnakes weekly in less than one morning this way, so it can be done quick! (Babies were kept on non-loose substrate here.)
I went this way since snake spit (e.g., the saliva that they use to lubricate the swallowing of the food item) always seemed real sticky and tended to pick up aspen in my experience.
