A friend and I caught one in s.e. Ohio way back that regurged two rabbits in the front seat of his car. It was one of the largest I've seen, but was only 6.5 to 7 ft. I don't see black rats anymore as I live in Michigan now, but I don't believe they reach record lengths, like 9 ft, anymore. They are much scarcer throughout their range and rarely live long enough in the wild in my opinion. Also, never heard of any record lengths in captivity. I don't think they get longer than grey rats either, as I saw a grey in Alabama that was the longest rat ever for me. It's tail was on the median line and head was on the edge of the road, surely over 6 ft, at least. I think the biggest rats in captivity now are probably the Taiwan beauties. They're supposed to get to nine ft. also. I'm thinking the moellendorf's ratsnake might set some records in captivity too, as they hit seven ft. pretty easily, and can get bigger. One more to think about is the king rat, carinata. I've heard of eight ft. wild caughts. My largest snake at this time is a six ft. moellendorffi. Later...TC.
