It's hard to tell for sure what you saw but it probably was a Corn or Rat Snake. There is even some other options depending on where you live. The good part is that none of those snakes are poisonous and they all are very docile and even make great pets. My kids play with ours all the time. They feed on rodents so they could be a welcome friend.
