In Reply to: Great Plains Rat or Texas Rat (Juvenile)? posted by chris_mcmartin on September 11, 2002 at 16:38:20:
From the picture I would say its a lindheimeri, those little buggers look remarkably similar as juveniles. Tx rats definatley can have subcaudal stripes, in fact I think most juvies do. A head shot would be the most usefull fo id.

:I caught this on my neighbor's front sidewalk a couple of weeks ago and re-released it. I thought it was emoryi at first, but the head looks more like lindheimeri. However, the subcaudals have the pale stripe which according to Tennant's Texas Snakes book differentiates emoryi from lindheimeri!
:I've found several DOR emoryi in the area but have yet to see a lindheimeri; but that's not to say they don't exist here (NE San Antonio, where both are known to exist).
:Is it possible that this juvenile was a hybrid, or are there lindheimeri with the pale subcaudal stripe (conversely, are there emoryi with the generally-pale crown as opposed to the typical "spearpoint")?
