Whether the snake is a hybrid or not is a tough call. John Malone found it while doing a herp survey for TPWD at Lost Maples and thought it might be a hybrid. I agreed at the time, based partly on its size, how dark the top of the head was, and its temperament (TX Rat all they way!).
However, in Werler and Dixon's Texas Snakes, they mention a size record for bairdi collected by John at that site and I believe this is that snake. So they regarded it as bairdi (it is preserved in the TCWC I believe).
Tough call for me.
