In Reply to: Thanks Chris !! Looks more like a TX Rat, but do I know, Ha n/m posted by Ken Diehl on July 17, 2002 at 07:18:30:
I have seen TX rats from the vicinity of Lost Maples and they were all distinctly blotched snakes (not striped). This snake was distinctly striped. They only thing that suggested obsoleta to me was the dark coloration (bairdi from near this area aren't that dark, particularly on the head) and its size (it was a big snake, I don't remember the actual size, but it is cited in Werhler and Dixon).
It could be that once a bairdii from that NE part of the range get that big they get dark?
If I had to call it one species or the other, I would have called it a bairdi. It definitely wasn't a pure obsoleta in my opinion.
