I completely agree with Rick Staub because this is the reality of the evidence that we have on the inbreeding issue with reptiles. Rick's "blanket statements" are based on factual outcomes of the real data generated on breeding many species of reptiles over multiple generations. Ross and Marzec, at the time of the publishing of the "Reproductive Husbandry of Pythons and Boas" did not have a lot of personal experience in breeding reptiles and derived their ideas on inbreeding depression by looking at non-reptilian taxa. Rick directly addressed the data they presented on Dumeril's Boas that was ultimately linked to husbandry, not inbreeding. Recent studies on wild populations of reptiles show that inbreeding and tight breeding family groups is commonplace, especially in isolated microhabitat environments that inhibit broad dispersal. This recent data suggests that there may be genetic mechanisms in place in wild populations that inhibit the effects of inbreeding depression. Steve Osborne
