In Reply to: Sand is by FAR the best substrate... posted by Rick on November 14, 2002 at 00:58:29:
I hate to come off as rude, but come on Rick. The best substrate??? Thats like saying the best form of entertainment for children is to play in traffic. It is NOT Leos' instinct to lick SAND, it is however their instinct to lick clacium carbonate they get from the ROCKS (i.e. limestone) that are prevalent in their natural habitat. All you have to do is look at their feet and that alone will tell you if they are designed to live on sand. The answer is clearly NO. They have thin fingers w/ claws.....meant for a rocky environment. I'm not saying they never encounter sand, but it is not the main component of their natural environment. Go to a desert in Pakistan and see how many leos you find. I can't say this enough, so excuse the caps: THE SAFETY OF MY ANIMALS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN TRYING TO NURTURE MY EGO BY THINKING I KNOW EXACTLY HOW THEY LIVE IN THE WILD AND IN TURN GIVING THEM POTNTIALLY HARMFUL AND INACCURATE SURROUNDINGS! I know the sand debate will always be around, but for me there is no issue....NO SAND WILL EVER TOUCH MY LEOS AGAIN. They will healthier and happier because of it.
