Leos have been known to get impactions from food like mealies and crix in the past. An impaction is still an impaction and would cause the food to be unable to pass and digest.
Rick is a good breeder. I saw one of the babies my friend got from him yesterday and it was perfect. So what if it was kept on sand? It's not impacted. There's husbandry that you need to take into account. Do you know how he feeds his leos? Do you know how long he spends with them everyday?
And using any substrate doesn't mean there won't be accidents. Someone just had their leo break it's back and the little guy lived on papertowels with nothing but a couple dishes and a half log hide. Does that mean we shouldn't put anything taller than two inches in the cage because there's a chance a 3 inch fall could've broken its back? Or stop using heavy dishes because they could break the back while trying to dig under it?
