But I would bet that your indigo that pushes the food with its nose (i have had them do that too, by the way) would refuse to eat a decaying, rotten dead animal...but would be likely to accept a fresh killed or fresh frozen/thawed.
everyone seems to think that snakes only eat live prey in the wild, but it would be interesting to see if that were really the case. My guess is they approach dead animals and do that "nose grind" thing and determine if the dead animal is acceptable or not.
my snakes have also exhibited this behavior when they seem to "want" to eat but something in their instincts is telling them not to...ex. a heavily gravid female...they will push it around with their nose as if they are excited, but refuse to eat it.
