: an experiment similar to the one you propose. I am guessing olfaction is the key for the snake to determine how decomposed a prey item is. Understanding that system better would probably help, but I wonder what compunds in the smell of decay are the key inhibitory components. I honestly don't think my FWC would respond to any inhibitory component as long as the decomposing animal were not desiccated.
: As for snakes eating dead items in the wild, I know this to be the case in at least one circumstance from a night drive I took, where I found a getulus eating a roadkill gopher snake.
