I was blessed again with another small clutch of hatchling eastern indigos. In the past, I have usually gone through the hair pulling stage as I tried to wean my babies on to small minnows and then scented fuzzies and finally frozen thawed mice. That still may be the best protocol. These hatchlings typically didn't accept their first meal until the 6-10 week mark. This year, I had some left over baby quail that I was using to feed some stubborn olive pythons and decided to offer them to the one remaining baby indigo that I have left. With nothing to lose, I just placed the frozen/thawed 1-week old quail next to the one remaining baby indigo (in their separate boxes) under the newspaper and left him alone. The next day, I took a look and much to my surprise, he ate. This was unusual in that he hatched on June 15 and fed very soon after for the first time. This snake has even taken a second quail. Maybe this was just one of those rare indigos that had a great early feeding response, or, what I believe, that quail/birds seem to elicit a strong feeding response which is why I use them for stubborn boas, pythons and various colubrids. Rodentpro.com is an excellent source for quail.
