: Several people have been posing the question lately as to why the sudden popularity of yellowtails…and if anyone will have any available (as in cb babies) this summer.
: Here’s my thoughts:
: 1- since Chuck Elliott got out of Drymarchon, it appears no one has had any consistent luck producing yellowtails. Less availability tends to lead to more people wanting the animals than animals available.
: 2- Some really cool pics of big YT’s have been posted on lately (check indigosnakes.com)
: 3- They are the largest of the subs on average (that’s arguable …but it’s my opinion) and probably the largest colubrid in the world (anyone care to contest that?)
: 4- They are extremely beautiful and variable. If they are ever available as CB’s in large numbers, a large variety of color variants may be produced. I can even see these guys getting to the point where “locality” specimens are produced. Some are jet black with only a yellow tail (which can be mustard to BRIGHT yellow), some are lighter in ground color…they can be brown, slate grey etc. The belly can be white or yellow…the head can be black or brown or grey or yellow.
: Interestingly…they are the only sub of Drymarchon that lacks the distinguishing “slash” under the eye, typical of Drymarchon. It’s been recently suggested that they may be their own species…as they do not appear to integrade with D.c.melanurus, even though their ranges overlap. Makes sense to me.
: I have a pretty good variety of color variants within the 5 adult snakes that I have…I will be posting pics soon. The 8’ + female that I just got in a couple weeks ago is an absolutely AWESOME snake. I just took some good pics of her…and my guess is her pics are going to make this sub even more popular.
: Now if I can only get eggs…
: PS I don’t think (regrettably) that you are going to see any cb yellowtails available this year. There are a very few (as in like 2) people that I personally know of that have a small clutch of good eggs…and as far as I know …they were accounted for as soon as they were laid, or the breeders are holding all of them back.

I have noticed the fervor with which people tend to covet Yellowtails lately myself. They pop up on WHOLESALERS and BROKERS lists from time to time and there is a huge rush to snap them up, they often are sold within hours of the original posting.
Dean mentioned the possibility of color variants, which scares the beegeezers out of me, because it reminds me of line breeding(Or is it line danceing?) that is all the rage in both colubrid circles and boa circles right now. Witness the albino hognose, line bred and sooo weak that half the time the eggs come up bad more often than not. Go figure.
I am impressed at the large number of Yellowtails Dean has been able to amass(5) and wish him the best of luck in produceing them. I know that Ill be one of the people in line to buy some, as I do not have any Y/T's. Good luck Dean!
Crazy Fools Reptiles had some a number of years back, and frankly they were outstanding looking snakes, Just curious, did any of you guys end up with their stock?
Yellow tails....theyre not JUST for breakfast anymore:)
