Welcome to the Soviet Socialist State of New Jersey. That is such crap that some bureaucrat has taken it upon himself to say that you cant keep a legally captive bred, completely harmless, easy to care for and rather COMMON snake. Even the Endangered Species Act leaves a little wiggling room so that those interested can actually keep them. It's really sad that's the case in NJ.
Out here in the West Coast, F&G officials tend to concern themselves with mostly native animals, and that's how it should be.
You may want to try other subspecies like the D.c. unicolor or maybe a Texas indigo. They aren't all black, but interesting none the less.
