I didn't know it was you until you posted your name. I'm the laziest of the Drymarchon post-a-lots. Here's why.
1. I feed in the regular enclosure: I feel there is more threat to the snake by moving a distended, recently aggitated from feeding, snake from one cage to another. I never move a snake for at least 24 hours after a meal.
Those that feed in separate containers probably feed smaller, more frequent meals that would be less likely to injure a stuffed snake. My fear is that I would be moving a less than saciated snake that wants more food and sees my hands coming at him as the rest of the meal. OUCH! Since other people have been feeding their snakes in separate cages for years, it could be said that my concerns may be unjustified, but it's worked for me for quite a few years now.
2. I use white pine shavings (the finer the better) as a substrate and I spot clean every day, scooping out the messy parts, leaving the unsoiled until it gets kind of sparse. Then I thoroughly clean the cage.
Newspaper and total cage cleaning with every poop is certainly more sanitary, I'd just get sick of it way too fast. That's part of why I do what I do.
