As you see, there are several sucessfull methods for substrates, maintenance, and feeding. Be open to all of them and see which works best for your snakes, then stick with it.
Oh yeah, a little more on the substrate of white pine. My snakes love to burrow in it and although certainly there is a possibility of injestion, I haven't seen any trouble with it with any snakes of my own or of any of my local friends snakes. White pine is the only real option for wood shavings here in the Pacific Northwest.
