: : : : : hi guys! just a quick question for you all, ive just finished an 8 week cooling period on my melanurus, ive placed them together and they immediately tried to get as far away as possible from each other. last year i didnt cool them as much and they mated immediately but produced nothing. this year i cool them more and they arent interested, they are just coiled up at opposite ends of the vivarium. any ideas what to do now?

: : : peter-- drymarchon breed while they cool, in fact, cooler temps trigger breeding urge. i introduce mates in late october and separate them when they start to get active again, usually early feb. my black tails seem most comfortable cooling in the mid to upper sixties. put them together when it gets cold. they'll find a way to warm up!

: : thanks for that, the problem is that whenever you ask for advice on breeding melanurus you get told something different, when i posted back in october i think it was, i was advised via e-mail to cool them and then breed them whereas i had been told before to put them together as they were cooled, this didnt work so i tried cooling them first this time but it was an even worse result, at least last time when they were hardly cooled they mated just not successfully. i have also been advised not to cool them at all as they come from much warmer climes than the rest of the drymarchon family, after a while it makes you feel like throwing your hands in the air and screaming.
: peter--- i should have mentioned yesterday that i keep my animals in several extremely large tanks that are connected to each other. the snakes are free to roam wherever and they act accordingly. this may taint the "study". they basically call the shots. they behave like they're in the wild.
: they usually view me w/ some disdain, unless i'm holding food in my hand and then suddenly i'm the man! i keep them at ambient room temp winter and summer. they prefer cool to
