According to an article I have in an old Vivarium...........these are "post-copulatory plugs". Per the article, these are expelled once a year shortly after the first breeding of the year.
The theory is that the plugs are produced by secretions from the males kidney following insemination.
Two hypothesis were given for this: 1. Sperm retention in the female.
2. Impediment to further copulations by competing males.
That's all I got! Hope it sheds some light.
Any of you guys that know WAY more than I do please let me know if you think I'm off the mark.
Article was in The Vivarium, Vol 3, #3.
