My dog (min-pin) disappeared a week ago. Within 30 minutes of his disappearance, I was out searching for him. Yesterday, my daughter's friend sees this little boy playing with my dog, she demands the return of my dog, boy reluctantly returns my dog to my house. His story is that he didn't know who the dog belonged to, so they decided to keep it. I had posted 'lost dog' ads, and there was one right in front of his house, but he claims he never saw it.
I began to reprimand the kid for keeping my dog (you knew he belonged to SOMEBODY!), but after some thinking, I decided that my dog was returned safe and sound, and that the boy did not mean any harm. As a reward for the 'return' of my dog, I offered him his choice: a Chilean rose tarantula, giant black millipede, or baby bearded dragon. He cleared it with his mom, and chose the bearded dragon.
My wife thinks I did the wrong thing in rewarding the boy. She correctly points out that he never had any intention of returning the dog, and only reluctantly returned it after being confronted by my daughter's friend. I contend that he did take good care of my dog, and regardless of the boy's intention, he's back home, safe and sound. Besides, the boy obviously wanted a pet, and I made the best of the situation and recruited a future herper.
Should I have rewarded the boy? Realistically, what would you have done in this situation? Your opinion?
