: This was in Bastrop, Texas, and it's about 1 hour east of Austin. My Granny has also talked about seeing chicken snakes when she was a kid. She lived in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, and I don't think their the same "chicken snakes" that are in Bastrop. Scientific names sure help...
Snakes I have seen refered to as "chicken snakes".....Mostly E.obseleta(nearly all subspecies),but also E.g.emoryi,E.g.guttata,P.m.sayi,P.m.melanoleucus,P.m.mugitus,and even L.getula.Mostof the time,if you ask someone to describe a chicken snake,it will turn out to be the local subspecies of Elaphe obseleta.
