I'm not claiming to be the expert here, but it's my opinion that comparing herp shows (or what they *could be*) to shows for other livestock is comparing apples to oranges. The amount of money and effort involved is just not any where near the same ballpark as, for example, pedigree dog breeds.
The trade in "pure bred" dogs has gone on for centuries, for one; that's a good amount of time for the cummunity to get it's crap together. What is the median profit on a show-quality pure-bred puppy? What is the median profit on a "show quality" corn snake?
I don't think it's exactly fair to blame breeders either for the lack of a "system" or for the indiscresions of those at the boundary. What we need to do is just look forward and think of a way that we, the "little guys" (who are actually the ones driving this industry in my opinion) can take advantage of our position.
We can exploit our knowledge, the internet, and even our capitol influence (among other things, to be sure) and make something happen here.
Does anyone have experience setting up a "fund" or other NPO type entities? Maybe it's time we just start a grass-roots drive to raise the funds to pull something like this together? While I have the greatest respect for Rich, Kathy, Don, etc... as has been stated a million and a half times they have neither the time, nor the motivation to make this happen. It's up to us, folks. You can rest assured that they will "buy in" to the project oncee it's up and running, even if they aren't compelled to partake on the creation procecss.
