I, too, understood what serpwidgets was saying the first time I read his post. And, I'd be another of the first in line to buy such a book. One reason for the problem with defining the standards for specific guttata morphs, is the fact that herp "shows" greatly differ from shows for other livestock.
With dogs, cats, horses, birds, even with rats and mice, the shows are competitive events. Exhibitors enter their animals in a competion for which the best example of its breed or variety is the one that receives the blue ribbon. Second and third place get the red and white ribbons respectively.
At herp "shows" there's no such activity. Everyone there is exhibiting simply in order to sell or trade livestock. This is why there aren't any standards. The breeders aren't required to meet a standard in order to enter an animal in a category. Not only do I feel that a Standard booklet is a good idea, but I feel that the herpetophile community needs to get into the activity of using shows as competitive events.
When show standards are established, upgrading of the quality of the livestock quickly follows. The best breeders, those that keep the most accurate records, and that conscienciously breed to the standards, will be the ones that will benefit the most. I'm one of the people that will willingly pay a bit extra for an animal of known ancestry, no matter what its species.
Just my POV,
Tricia
