There was a snake at my mother-in-laws house today. It was maybe 12 inches in length and overall fat for its lenght. Towards the base of its tail it narrowed down almost abruptly. I didn't see any sign of rattles, the tip of the tail was almost needle-like. It was definitely as silver-grey color with distinctive almost symmetrical splotches in black (not bands). I couldn't see the belly. There were sharply defined black stripes on the top side of the head from just behind the eyes to the neck. There was little difference in the width of the head and of the neck.
We live near the Tampa Bay area of Florida. My mother-in-law is just over the Hernando County border near the Withylacoochi River. Any ideas as to what type of snake it might be? We are all nervous with snakes since my border collie was bitten by a rattler two weeks ago. Luckily, and with emergency vet care, she has made a full recovery and is back with her brother.
