THE RECORD (Waterloo Region, Ontario) 08 May 03 Province pays $437,000 for rattlesnake bite remedy
Parry Sound (CP): The Ontario government has given $437,000 to a local hospital designated as the rattlesnake antivenin headquarters for the province.
The West Parry Sound Health Centre will buy and distribute the antivenin to the 12 existing depots around Ontario, the hospital's director of lab services said yesterday.
Dr. Ola Kassim said the depot system will help prevent antivenin supply problems.
The snakebite antivenin costs about $1,200 Cdn ($872 U.S.) a vial. It takes about two dozen vials to treat a bad bite from an Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake -- the only venomous snake in the province.
Last year, eight people in the Parry Sound area were bitten by Massasauga rattlesnakes.
