We're tight on money, and it's alway a possibilty that we cannot get it. Would a heatpad replacing the lamp work?

:It sounds like you need to get a thermostat that will be able to control your temperature. Most of the thermostats on the market will not work for Uros - they max out at 105 degrees F. Herpsupplies.com sells the Ranco Single-Stage Electronic Temperature Control, Wired w/ 3-outlet grounded extension cord, model #ETC111000-W for $75.00. The great thing about this one is that the temp range is from -30 to 220 degrees F. Uros like it best between 120-130. You have to make sure that you do not use this with a Mercury Vapor Bulb. Works perfect. What ever you do - make sure that you are monitoring the temperature.
