MOST of the individual little pieces floated, but a few sank from every handful I would use. Someone here posted that it seemed most of their sank. I've gone through two big bags of it and not noticed more than an occasional piece sinking, though. Of course, in a tank, that few pieces (if you feed in the tank) can be nasty fast, or it becomes fish food if you have fish, or bottom feeder food for those muds/musks.
