:I know its still a bit early for turtle searching, but I went looking at the peninsula(I live in Erie, PA) I saw a dead shoft shell turtle and one, not sure which kind, with iots head and one arm missing. It was sad. I also just talked to a guy who said a friend of his who does research founf over 12 dead map turtles in the area. Besides the two I found dead, I saw no others. This is really sad, and I have a feeling alot of it has to do with pollution. You wouldnt believe how much garbage I saw at one small pond right next to the ranger station!
The severe Winter that we have had here in the North east may have played a part in the all these deaths. I have had reports from many individuals that keep ponds with turtles in that that have lost ALL their animals to the ravages of 9 weeks of single digits and teens. These people have allowed their animals to hibernate outside for years and never lost a single one. I suspect that might be one possible reason for the high mortality rate.
