help horrible horrible fungus infection (no shell rot yet)

i have been putting betadine on it ( as suggested by much more than a few people) for about a month to no avail so i took it to the vet hospital where i work (im a kennal worker not a dvm) i have been instructed to put antifungal athletes foot/ jock itch cream on it but the problem is the animal needs to be dry for me to apply and stay dry after aplying i know i can take it out of the water but for how long i also know they must be under water to eat what am i to do... help please and thanks in advance for you responses.
