WTF handling question...

Hello everyone.
I'm considering a WTF, and I've been reading up a bit lately. My only concern is that I keep seeing "unnecessary handling" come up as a cause of the red leg syndrome. In your opinions, what exactly constitutes "unnecessary"? I remember a friend who had a WTF, and constantly had it out, just sitting on his arm or crawling on him while he was watching TV and stuff... Should this sort of contact be discouraged? I have a green iguana, and I love "playing" with her all the time, and I don't know if a pet that I shouldn't really handle is the right thing for me.
Thanks!
