Do not feed Star torts any insect proteins, keep them strictly on dark leafy greens during the winter months and let them graze in the summer on grass (I grow timothy and bermuda, check out www.turtlestuff.com for the grass mix), weeds, etc. During the summertime, they get fresh dandelion, hibiscus, red clover, cactus pads, etc. When these items become hard to get in the winter, feed them mustard greens, endive, collard greens, etc. I also use the mix from Dr. Susan Donoghue at Walkabout Farm with their greens.
:I am considering getting a 4 year old star tortoise and I am wondering what kind of diets they have. I have kept and bred Sulcatas for years and am not sure if the diet of a Star tortoise is similar to the Sulcata. What types of grasses do they prefer? What percentage should be grasses rather than vegetable matter? I have also heard that on occasion star tortoise eat insects. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
