How long have you had him? He may just be nervous that's what mine did when I got them. He may be getting up when your not there, put some food out just in case. I'd try to refrain from digging him up because it really stresses them out. It's normal for mine to stay buried for most of the day then come out for 8 to 10 hours, and even then they'll go back into their box off and on.
