W&W named Elseya stirlini which they said was from Queensland. It theoretically encompassed what John Cann called E. irwini as their holotype was what has been referred to as the Burnett River turtle, a different species again. However, E. stirlingi was demonstrated to be nomen nudem by Iverson et al. 2001. Hence E. iwini is a valid name. Also E. irwini is a different species from that in the eastern Cape York region and the one from further south. E. irwini is valid.
