many DNA phylogenies are in fact "gene trees" which represent the relationships revealed by examining a single gene, which may or may not reflect the evolutionary relationships of populations of animals.
read over the thread above on mtDNA - i think that i present a good case for using a "total evidence" approach - examine all known characters and draw conclusions based on all of them.
