Wally the Walleyed Border Patrolman

It was Sept. 96..the location was Hwy. 277 N. of Del Rio, Texas.Me and a friend were out in search of our first L. alterna, it was early in the night..not too long after dark. We were optimistic about the night to come..as it was our last night in alterna country...and we had already found over 100 snakes of various kinds the previous 3 nights..but no alterna.Our hopes were high..as we were road cruising one of the best stretches of highway for alterna in Tx. AS I said before we were N of Del Rio...and driving down a large hill..posted at the bottom of the hill was a small border patrol station.As we pulled up to it we were asked the obligatory questions like.."Where are you going" ,"Where are you coming from"..yada yada yada...well while this guy was questioning us about what we were doing..I happened to notice that he had what is called a "floating (lazy) eye"...so I really couldn't tell who he was talking to..it could have been me ..but I wasn't sure, 'cause it looked like he was looking at my friend Steve. Well turns out he was talking to me..and since I didn't answer him he kinda got pissed at me ..and asked me again...thats when I said in a Jersey tone of voice " Oh your talking to me "...well thats was it...he made us pull over to the side..get out of the car..and go thru everything in the car. All this hassle because I didn't realize who the guy was talking to.Well as he was checking us...I noticed a car pulling thru the station ..this was one of the only cars we had seen on the road up to this point. WEll the Border patrol found nothing , told us to be careful..and told me to watch "my attitude"..but I didn't give him any..I swear...and they told us we could go on thru.AS we were driving off I said to Steve..."watch this..the only car we see all night gets ahaead of us, we'll probably find a dead alterna up ahead." Sure enough..not 10 minutes later...there in the middle of 277 lay a slowly wiggling 30" light phase blairs female. I felt sick ..if that guy hadn't of held us up back there ...we probably would have found the snake alive..but who knows..maybe not..I would like to think so.Moral of the story...always look an officer in the eyes when he is speaking to you (if you can tell which one to look at )!!
