yes, keep the "shallow" area of the tank warmed by the basking lamp
you may want to get rid of the "land area" and replace it with afloating isalnd (i've used upside down tops of rubbermaid storage boxes) or big cork bark sheets.

as for substrate i have doen both with softshells but when iuse sand they alwasy seem more comfortable
but of course sand clogs every filter
