Poohgirl-- That's a nice Florida Softshell you have there! First, let me say I'm not a veterinarian. But I've seen this in a couple of my softshells in the past and I took them to a vet the first time this happened to me. This is an infection. Sometimes, skin will slough off and sometimes a pussy mass will build up, like a giant pimple. This is usually caused by dirty water, a scrath that becomes infected, or not giving a softshell the opportunity to bask in light. Is your water clean? Do you have a substrate for him (or her) to bury itself in? Mine have usually improved on their own by keeping the water immaculately clean. If it gets really bad, you have to go to a vet to have him clean (express) the wound and in some extreme cases, provide injectible antibiotics. That's my opinion on it, although I'd like to hear your responses to my questions. (Maybe you'll get lucky at the "Tortvet" will also see your post and provide a professional medical comment.) --Maxx
