:I have just ID my new baby as a Florida Soft Shell. I am a bit shocked as I purchased it from a booth at a local fair and the lady who sold it to me assured me that it would not get bigger than 6 inches. I was looking forward to having an aquatic turtle I could keep indoors.

:I am disappointed, however, I have grown very attached to it these past few days and I'm determined that we make this work. I understand it will eventually need a pond-size setup. What I would like to know is how long does it take for this species to reach full size? I want to see how long I've got to get ready.

:And does it have any special dietary needs? What is the optimum temperature that it's habitat should be kept at? My baby is 2 inches long right now. Is there anyway to find out if it's male or femal right now so I don't keep calling it and "it"?

Males are way smaller than females so if you got a male a large tank will suffice. The lady did mislead you .I have seen males kept in captivity for yrs that werent big at all while the females are big.Hope you got a male hey you have a 50/50 chance.
