I have mine in a 30 gallon filled half way with stepped gravel so that there is a deep end and a shallow one. He spends most of his time in the shallow water where he can bury himself but still breath without having to unbury himself, but will come out to eat and swim in the deep side about once a day. They don't get out of the water to bask much, I've only seen mine out half a dozen times in 6 months, so they need warm water, 80 degrees is good. Careful of putting him in with tadpoles unless the tadpoles are bigger than him, mine LOVES tadpoles to snack on!
